Tecnalia is a R&D centre located in the North of Spain that is been working for the foundry sector during the last fifty years, both with iron and steel and non ferrous metals. Tecnalia has a 1,000 sqm facility in Irun for manufacturing prototypes and short series of parts of iron, steel, aluminium, magnesium, zamak, zinc and copper for our customers, with a melting capacity up to 1 ton. We deal with sand moulds, metallic moulds and high pressure die casting (950 t). We cover the whole chain of the production process of parts: mould design, alloy choice, simulation of mould filling, part casting, thermal treatment and mechanical, chemical and microstructural characterization. Currently we are developing new alloys for improving mechanical behaviour (lengthening, yield strength, etc) and for higher temperature use than standard alloys (aluminium). We are also developing processes for including materials at nanometric scale in ferrous and non ferrous alloys in order to improve their behaviour. Another activity is the implementation of technologies developed by our human team in artificial vision (finished part inspection), monitoring of the process, data capture and algorithm development, digital twins, etc. Besides, we train technical staff of foundries in ferrous and non ferrous alloys (materials and processes), mould design, parts defects, etc.
